“It’s not a Zumba class, it’s not an aerobics class, it’s a bit different. It’s just a bit of fun. Come rain or shine, we play football.”

Jo Treharne, founder of Canterbury Old Bags United

“Bags for life”

Canterbury Old Bags United was formed in January 2017 by Jo Treharne. Jo wanted to play football as she had been denied that chance in childhood, and knew that there must be other women in the same position.

‘The Bags’ have around 40 members mostly aged 30 and over who meet regularly to play football, get fit, have fun and make friends. They play in recreational tournaments across the south east and have recently taken part in the ‘Old Girls’ World Cup’ in France and in the Darby-Rimmer Walking Football Tournament in Salisbury. The Bags have also set up two indoor futsal teams who compete in the Kent League.
