Here come the girls!

In a big step for girls football in Canterbury, six youth teams representing the city took to the pitch for the first time on Sunday, 10 September, all representing Canterbury Eagles FC.

Four teams played at home in scorching heat on the playing fields of Simon Langton Girls' School, which is in a partnership with the Eagles to provide more female pathways into football, with two more teams playing away. The under 11s, under 13s and under 16s won their games, with the under 9s, under 10s and under 12s losing theirs.

Also representing the city were the newly-formed Canterbury Eagle's women's side, who chalked up their first win with an 8-2 victory at home to Baypoint FC development and Canterbury Old Bags United who were defeated 4-2 by Anchorians in their first match of the new Kent women's recreational league.

Jo Treharne, women and girls' development lead for Canterbury Eagles said: "we had almost 100 girls or women representing our city this weekend which is a massive step forward for the female game in the city and something that has never been achieved before. Win or lose, every player gave their absolute all for the club and we're so proud of all of them, especially our new under 10s and under 9s players, most of who have never played before."
