Eagles disability team update

New coaches Lee, Billy, Sam and the disability squad

With new coaches Lee Ballard, Sam Perkins, and Billy Phillips at the helm – the trio took over from long-time coach and local football legend Tony Newington last summer – our disability team is still flying high.

Head Coach Lee told us “The whole team was very welcoming when we arrived to step into Tony’s big -to-fill-boots! Obviously, we have a different way of doing things so that took a bit of getting used to for the squad, but everyone has been up for it and things are going really well.”

“We’re striving to build on the amazing team spirit we inherited and offering our players lots of encouragement,” he continued.

That encouragement seems to be paying off, as the team, which plays in the Kent Disability Football League and is sponsored by Scriberia, has played 15 matches across three tournaments already this season, and lost just a couple of these clashes.

Known as the Hurricanes, they train on a Wednesday night at Canterbury College, and where it’s traditionally been an indoor set up, in a week or so they’ll be taking to the great outdoors to gain more experience in open space in a bid to keep improving their technique and game play.

Lee and the coaching team are enjoying getting to know the players; they’re managing quite a large squad, but as each player is given the opportunity to play, and one or two sit out the odd match as part of a newly introduced rotation system, improvements are showing, and confidence is growing.

The future’s looking bright for the Hurricanes.
