Lionesses Day for aspiring female footballers a success

Aspiring female footballers enjoyed a family-friendly treat on Saturday at a special event organised by the girls’ section of the club.

The 'Lionesses Day' coincided with England Women's first world cup fixture versus Haiti in the opening stages of this year's FIFA competition. 60 football-crazy girls and their families watched the action live on the big screen at Simon Langton Girls' School before being put through their paces in a fun football training session and to try out for one of the Eagles' girls teams.

Eagles Co-Chairman Dan Porter said: "Girls football is the fastest growing sector of our club, we've gone from no teams at all two years ago to this season where we will be entering six girls teams and a senior women's team into the league. The fact that today's event attracted 60 girls who want to play football is amazing. We've taken on lots of new players already and we can't wait for the new season to start. We're hoping that the school will become a regional hub for female football in east Kent."
