Eagles celebrate strong performances at Chartham tournament

Canterbury Eagles Football Club enjoyed an incredible weekend of football at a tournament held by Chartham Football Club over Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June. This two-day event saw teams from across East Kent competing to win in their age groups under a ferocious summer sun.

The Eagles were represented by six teams, from under 8s to under 11s, with spirited performances evident across the board. Players’ commitment to teamwork was on full display, with each team demonstrating resilience, sportsmanship and determination in equal measure.

The standout result came from the U10 Romans, who were crowned champions. Their final match was a hard-fought 1-0 win against a strong Sturry Kings side, with Ben Hunt scoring the decisive goal with a volley from outside the box.

U10 Celts played their first tournament of the year, competing against hosts Chartham Reds, along with Hawkinge, to come within mere moments of qualifying for the knockout round. They managed a draw in the final match versus Chartham Reds to finish a very creditable third.

The U8 Romans also impressed, finishing runners-up to Hernhill Herons, after a string of energetic performances. It was also a warm welcome to U8 Saxons in their first competitive tournament after forming under coach John Evans.

U11 Saxons showed great determination, winning three group games against tough opposition and beating the hosts Chartham in the semi-finals courtesy of a last-minute goal. They were pipped by a narrow loss in the final to cap a brilliant and fun day at the inaugural tournament.

The U9 Saxons also competed across a busy schedule, showcasing their growing confidence and progress as a squad. While results didn’t bring them any silverware on this occasion, the team played with the never-say-die spirit they have displayed all season.

Chartham were excellent hosts, with the tournament running smoothly across both days. Matches were well-organised and played in a positive spirit, with volunteers, coaches and referees all contributing to a safe and welcoming environment.

"It was a brilliant weekend for the club," said Nathan Hunt, U10s Romans coach. "Every team played hard and had fun and it was great to be able to watch all our teams play."

The tournament also highlighted the importance of community sport, with many families cheering on the players and positively celebrating their efforts. It also reflected the respect and collaboration between grassroots clubs, all working towards the shared goal of providing football for all.

Dylan Williams, Club Development Officer, added, "It is great to have such good relationships with other local teams and brilliant to see everyone come together, have fun and continue their footballing journey."

Canterbury Eagles continues to grow, with 27 youth teams, five adult teams and two football development centres. The club’s strong presence at Chartham reflects this growth and commitment to providing grassroots football across all age groups.
