Bank Holiday Monday saw one of the most hotly contested games of the season as our two U16 teams — the Division 1 Celts (in green) and Division 2 Vikings (in purple) — went head-to-head at Herne Bay FC. With many of the boys playing their final season of youth football, the occasion was both a celebration of their journey and a full-blooded contest that showcased the depth of talent in this age group.

In front of a large and supportive crowd, the match lived up to the billing. The Celts came in as favourites, but the Vikings pushed them all the way, coming within minutes of a famous upset.

The first half saw the Celts dominate possession, with Lucas Grimbleby Bonilla pulling the strings in midfield and Bayo Ajibade and Ferdi Otto looking lively. However, the Vikings were well-drilled and resolute. Oliver Graña Ines led a disciplined back line, and Aki Hall did an excellent job shutting down Celts’ attacking threats. Orlando Barry's tireless running on the counter offered a consistent outlet for the Vikings, keeping the Celts on their toes.

Despite the Celts’ technical superiority, the Vikings remained composed, and the sides went into the break level at 0-0.

Early in the second half, it was the underdogs who struck first. A perfectly weighted through ball found Ayomide Oketunji, who coolly slotted past the Celts’ keeper to make it 1-0. With confidence growing, the Vikings pressed on and won a series of corners.

But the Celts responded. Harvey Brown capitalised on some defensive indecision and powered home an equaliser to level the match. Moments later, Harley Wilmot had a golden chance to restore the Vikings’ lead, but was denied by a spectacular save from Thurston Potter. Wilmot wasn’t to be denied twice, however. The referee blew for a penalty, and the talismanic striker stepped up and calmly converted, giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead with time ticking away.

It looked like the Vikings were set for a famous win — until heartbreak struck. With just two minutes left, Oscar Greenwood let fly from distance and found the bottom corner. Vikings' players and supporters were left frustrated as appeals for a foul in the build-up were waved away.

Extra-time was a test of endurance on the expansive Herne Bay pitch, and with players battling fatigue and cramp, the decider came from a scrappy moment in the box. A looping ball wasn’t cleared, and Olly Richards pounced to slot home what would be the winner.

It was a pulsating match, one that reflected the exceptional development and commitment of both squads. For the Vikings, it was a performance that underlined their progress and resilience, pushing their Division 1 counterparts all the way. For the Celts, it was a lesson in persistence and finding a way to win.

Coaches Stephen, Patrick, Dan and Gavin were able to bow out in a manner befitting their efforts, with a match that was not only a superb advert for youth football, but also a proud moment for the club.

Well played to all involved — a game to remember!

Many thanks to Hugh Potter for the fantastic photos.
