Best Futsal Foot Forward

As you know we play most of our football on grass in the UK, but across the world there is another version of the beautiful game, that’s played on a hard surface, called Futsal. Famous players, such as Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar all started off playing this form of football.

And we’re now excited to be introducing Futsal sessions to Canterbury Eagles! The sessions are a collaboration between Canterbury Eagles and Kent United FC, Kent’s premier Futsal club.

Head of Foundation Football, Dylan Williams, explained: “I am delighted that both clubs are able to work together to promote this growing format of the game. Not only is it a great opportunity to get involved in Futsal, it is also perfect for players wanting to develop their football skills.”

So what is Futsal?

Futsal is the most common form of small-sided football played across the globe.

It’s played indoors in a 5 v 5 format and there are few more differences from the 11-aside game that make it a great all round experience for players.

Firstly, it’s played with a smaller and heavier ball; the ball bounces far less and this encourages players to develop better control.

Secondly, as it’s often played indoors, or on hard surfaces, there’s no slide tackling allowed! Not only does this make it a mud-free game, but players learn to challenge, control and tackle the opposition technically, rather than physically.

And being 5-a-side teams, the amount of time that players spend on the ball increases, which also helps to improve control and technique.

Kids in Europe play this version of football until they’re 11 and often keep playing it alongside 11-a-side into their teens and beyond, but it is something that is not as popular in the UK.

Dylan explains: “Canterbury Eagles FC & Kent United FC are committed to providing opportunities for players, coaches and volunteers. Anyone with an interest to contact the club, if only for an informal chat, about what might be possible.”

Building Partnerships

With our partnership with Simon Langton to be based on their proposed 3G pitch, the Futsal partnership is another example of Canterbury Eagles’ commitment to the community. Dan Porter, Co-chairperson, said: “This is yet another example of how the club is working hard in developing partnerships for the benefit of the community.”

So who can join?

We will be running hour-long sessions, every Thursday, for age groups between under 9 and under 14 (school years 4 to 9). Sessions are open to Eagles and non-Eagles players, male and female, within the stated age range.

Who are the coaches?

A group of Eagles coaches have taken their futsal qualifications and are ready to go. Excitingly, they’ll be joined by England Futsal International Emma Brown, and Kent United’s very own Charlie Dast. Other members of the Kent United squad will also make guest appearances from time to time.

Where is the training?

Training will take place at Barton Manor School, Spring Lane, Canterbury CT1 1SU. Sessions are on Thursdays from 5.30pm.

How can I book?

You can find age group times and book sessions on our booking website. Sessions will be starting from 2nd February.
